September 11th ─ 3 people are dead and 1 suffered minor injuries in a chain-reaction collision that shut down parts of the 60 Freeway in Jurupa Valley, a Riverside County community early Saturday morning, September 9th . The Riverside County Fire Department responded to the call around 3:30 a.m. with reports of a fatal collision that occurred involving a semi-trailer truck and 4 other vehicles on the eastbound 60 Freeway near Pedley Road and east of Country Village Road. According to California Highway Patrol’ preliminary investigation, a 1995 Honda Accord carrying 3 occupants, was traveling eastbound along the 60 Freeway when for unknown reasons it lost control and careened head-on into a concrete K-rail center divider. The initial crash disabled the Honda’s lights on the front and rear of the vehicle, as it sat on the roadway blocking traffic.
A 2016 Ford Fusion driven by 27-year old Victor Tyler of Redlands approached the Honda Accord in the eastbound lanes. Unable to stop, the Ford Fusion collided with the Honda Accord. The impact ejected one of the Honda’s occupants, a man in his 20s, over the center divider into westbound traffic lanes of the 60 Freeway where he was run over by multiple vehicles, CHP officials said. The 2 other occupants of the Honda Accord, another man and a woman, were also struck in the wreck and pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. It is still unclear if all 3 occupants of the Honda Accord were inside the vehicle and ejected during the collision with the Ford Fusion, or whether they 3 occupants were outside the vehicle when they were struck. All 2 of the 3 victims in the Honda Accord were identified by Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau Saturday evening as Hemet residents Jose Perez, 27-years old, and Omar Arambula, 24-years old. Tyler was transported by ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries to both his upper arms, CHP said.
All Lanes of 60 Freeway West Closed
All lanes of the 60 Freeway west were closed near Pedley Road with only 1 lane was open on the eastbound side while hazmat officials cleaned up the wreckage. Those motorists who were caught in the traffic tried finding alternative ways around the crash site, but nearly caused additional collisions and backed up traffic further. Witnesses told dispatchers that some vehicles were trying to exit the freeway by driving the wrong-way getting off on a freeway on-ramp on Pyrite Street, nearly causing head-on accidents with other motorists. Some vehicles tried to bypass the collision by driving on the freeway’s shoulders. CHP logs also note that some motorists were trying to move from westbound lanes along the 60 Freeway into eastbound lanes through an opening in the center divider causing traffic to back up on the eastbound side of the 60 Freeway. All lanes were re-opened around 11:45 a.m.
