California Highway Patrol has confirmed the deaths of 2 women who were killed in a fiery single-vehicle collision on the San Diego (405) Freeway near Long Beach early Saturday morning, April 21st. The incident was reported to CHP dispatchers just after 3:30 a.m. when a white Chrysler van that was traveling southbound on the 405 Freeway veered into the right shoulder where it hit a metal guardrail. The Chrysler van then proceeded through a landscaped area where it struck a wooden sign post and came to a rest. According to CHP officer Dion Conley, “The Chrysler came to rest there; its left side wedged against a concrete barrier wall, and caught fire.” Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived on scene to find the van fully engulfed in flames.
The 2 female occupants were pronounced dead at the scene once fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze. The southbound lanes of the 405 freeway from Atlantic Boulevard to Cherry Avenue were closed while the Los Angeles Coroner’s office retrieved the bodies of the victims and cleanup crews worked to clear the wreckage. All lanes were reopened just after 5:00 a.m. just before the morning rush hour. The CHP’s South Los Angeles office asked anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 310-516-3355.
