Oxnard Police Believe High Speed Reckless Driving Caused Car To Run Into Utility Pole

Oxnard, CA (May 3, 2023) – Two people were killed, and two others were injured after a single-vehicle crash in Oxnard on Sunday night. The driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a power pole, according to officials with the Oxnard Police Department.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Arcturus Avenue and McWane Boulevard. The driver of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling west on McWane Boulevard when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the electrical pole. “Investigators believe speed, reckless driving, and alcohol were contributing factors to the collision,” said an Oxnard PD news release.

The Two Survivors Are In Stable Condition In at Ventura County Medical Center

Firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate all four men from the vehicle at the scene. Paramedics immediately began performing life-saving measures on two of the men, one of whom was believed to be the driver of the Cobalt. Sadly, both were later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The other two men were taken to the Ventura County Medical Center and are listed in stable condition. The incident remains under investigation by the Oxnard Police Department.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or that might have information about the incident was urged to contact Corporal Andrew Pinkstaff at 805-385-7550 or by email at andrew.pinkstaff@oxnardpd.org.

Here Is The Best Way To Avoid Hitting A Utility Pole When Driving?

There are several things you can do to avoid hitting a utility pole while driving:

  1. Pay attention to the road: Keep your focus on the road and avoid distractions like using your phone, eating or drinking, or adjusting the radio.
  2. Follow the speed limit: Stick to the speed limit and slow down if you’re approaching a turn or an intersection.
  3. Keep a safe distance: Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for sudden stops or unexpected turns.
  4. Be aware of your surroundings: Look out for utility poles and other obstacles that may be in your path. Watch for signs or markings that indicate the presence of utility poles or other hazards.
  5. Drive defensively: Anticipate potential hazards and be prepared to react quickly if necessary. Keep your hands on the wheel and be ready to brake or swerve if needed.

Remember, safety should always be your top priority when driving. If you do happen to hit a utility pole, stay in your vehicle and call for emergency services immediately.
