Lightning Strike Causes Chain-Reaction Crash on Highway 99 Near Fresno, CA
The time was roughly a little before 6:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
No details have been reported on exactly how many vehicles were involved in the Fresno pile-up, but reports say a motorcycle was one of the vehicles.
The makes and models of the other vehicles involved have not been reported, and the extent of damage to the vehicles is not known.
The number of people involved in the crash near Fresno have not yet been reported, nor the types of injuries that may have occurred.
No one involved in the multi-vehicle crash has been identified, including their names, ages, genders, and cities of residence.
Investigators will continue to gather information and details to understand the crash, and the sequence and factors that were involved.
At this time, no other details are known from reports, and authorities are urging drivers to use caution when driving during this period of rainfall in the area.
The atmospheric rivers that have been dumping rain in the area, including Visalia and Fresno, have led to numerous mud slides, downed trees, and flooded roads.
Impacted streets throughout the area, including the Fresno and Visalia area, have been identified as Temperance Avenue, Butler Avenue, Shaver Springs Road, Tollhouse Road, Fruit Avenue, Twain, Ashlan Avenue, McCall Avenue, as well as others.
Forecasters indicated Fresno could receive an inch of rain today. Additional rain in areas that are already saturated and flooded may cause more travel difficulties.
Authorities recommend monitoring news and reports for current conditions before heading out onto roadways.
As always, being prepared is important when driving in the rain.
Advice For Driving When Roads Are Flooded
The National Weather Service offered advice for drivers who encounter roads that are flooded.
- Never drive through a flooded road. The road may have collapsed under the water, or the water could be hiding obstacles such as rocks, boulders, trees, and other debris.
- Never drive around a barrier that has been set up to block a flooded road.
- It doesn’t take much water to be dangerous. The National Weather Service says only 6 inches of flood water that is moving fast can knock down an adult. It only takes roughly 12 inches of fast-moving water to float most cars away, and 2 feet of water to carry trucks and SUVs away.
- Do not travel on bridges over water that is moving fast. Flood water can destroy and carry a bridge away, often with no warning that the bridge is about to collapse.
- Do not leave your car if you are trapped in fast moving water.
- If water is rising inside the vehicle, authorities suggest trying to get on the roof.
- Listen for reports from authorities on a weather radio to find out current conditions. Always keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.
