A woman who was trying to cross the street Thursday night, October 13, 2011, in El Cajon was struck and killed by a pickup truck in the 600 block of E. Washington. As reported by CBS 8 San Diego, the victim was walking home from church when she was hit by the truck.
According to the news story, the woman was in her 50s, and was a widow with five children. She had immigrated to the U.S. from Iraq a couple of years earlier after a bomb explosion killed her husband in Iraq. A relative of the woman said she was excited about starting a new life.
El Cajon police told News 8 San Diego the driver who hit the pedestrian stopped after the accident, and she would not likely be charged. Investigators don’t think speed or alcohol was involved. Investigators said, according to the news story, the victim was wearing dark clothes and nighttime visibility may have been an issue. A friend, who was with the woman while she crossed the street, was not hit or injured.
Community members had tried to have a stop sign, traffic light or crosswalk installed in the area where the mother of five was killed.
