Police Chase near Murrieta Ends in Rollover Accident Killing Trayvon Ford
Murrieta, CA (April 21st, 2023) – A high-speed police pursuit of a suspected drunken driver ended in a fatal rollover crash that killed Trayvon Ford, 22, and severely injured another person on Saturday, April 17, 2023. The incident occurred at around 4:40 a.m. on the southbound 15 exit onto California Oaks Road in Murrieta, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials.
The Rollover Accident Happened on I-15 Freeway near California Oaks Road
Officer Javier Navarro stated that a patrol unit had spotted a Jeep Compass with no license plates shortly after 4 a.m. on the freeway near Magnolia Avenue in Corona. The CHP signaled the driver to pull over, but the driver sped away. During the ensuing pursuit, the Jeep reached speeds of up to 127 mph, exiting and re-entering the freeway several times.
The driver exited southbound I-15 at California Oaks Road, where he failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway and overturned the SUV. Trayvon Ford and another passenger, whose name was not released, were ejected onto the street, according to Navarro. The driver and another occupant of the SUV ran away as CHP officers arrived at the scene. Both men were apprehended within a few minutes without further incident.
Trayvon Ford and Another Passenger Were Both Rushed To The Hospital
Ford and the other passenger were rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where Ford was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The other victim suffered major injuries and was still receiving treatment as of Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
Navarro said that the driver of the SUV showed signs of inebriation, but toxicology test results were still pending on Wednesday. The man’s custody status could not be immediately confirmed, nor could the status of the passenger who allegedly fled with him.
The CHP officials expressed condolences to the family and friends of Trayvon Ford and urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Temecula CHP office. They also reminded motorists to drive responsibly and never drink and drive.
