Woman Killed in Six-car Collision on 15 Freeway in Temecula; Suspected DUI Driver Arrested
TEMECULA, CA (June 6, 2019) – The collision that killed Janet Genao in Temecula on the 15 Freeway on Tuesday was captured on video from a dashcam, reports say. The video, which was uploaded to YouTube, reveals a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that, according to police, smashed with catastrophic force into traffic.
The driver of the pickup—identified as Javier Caldera, 25 years old and a resident of Auburn, Washington—was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports say Caldera matches the description of a person who was arrested in Washington state in November in an incident involving a police pursuit.
The June 4 incident involved six vehicles in a collision on the 15 Freeway in the lanes that travel south, close to the Rancho California Road exit. Genao died in the crash. She was 44 years old and a resident of Murrieta.
The driver of a pickup truck—identified as a man 38 years old and a resident of Wildomar—was seriously injured when his pickup truck smashed into a building close to Temecula City Hall for parked cars, according to Mike Lassig, who is an officer with CHP. The victim’s name has not been reported.
Two other victims—described only as males—suffered injuries that were described as minor. Another driver may have been injured in the incident. None of the victims have been identified.
Reports say that Washington State Patrol indicated the identifying information of the person police pursued in November matched Caldera. In the incident in Washington, the suspect had been traveling at speeds over 92 miles per hour in a zone marked for 60 miles per hour. The suspect would not yield to the attempt by police to pull him over, and led officers on a chase. The suspect, who reports say was Caldera, was later arrested. He served two months jail time.
Investigators are continuing the examination of the evidence in the June 4 incident in Temecula.
