Man, and Teenaged Boy, Killed in 101 Freeway Crash in Sherman Oaks
SHERMAN OAKS, CA (April 27, 2021) – Early in the morning on Saturday in Sherman Oaks, four vehicles collided on the 101 Freeway, killing two people. The coroner’s office identified Felix Hernandez Pena as one of the victims killed in the crash. Pena was a resident of Santa Maria, 50 years old.
A boy–15 years old–died in the hospital; he was also a resident of Santa Maria. The boy’s name has not been reported.
According to Officer S. Geraty, who is with the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened on the eastbound side of the freeway, near Van Nuys Boulevard.
The time was roughly 12:08 a.m.
A vehicle–described as a Honda 2008–struck the back end of a box truck. The impact of the collision sent each vehicle to veer to the center dividing wall of the freeway. The box truck–described as an Isuzu–went into the lanes that head west, and a vehicle–described as a 2017 Honda–struck it.
According to Geraty, the Isuzu had significant damage from the crashes. The two people who died–Pena, and the 15-year-old boy–had been passengers in the Isuzu.
Concrete debris flew from the center divider wall when it was broken. It struck a vehicle–described as a Dodge–which had been traveling on the westbound side of the freeway.
Responders transported the driver of the 2008 Honda to the hospital. She suffered injuries that were described as moderate.
She was identified only as a resident of Los Angeles, 20 years old. Her name has not been reported. According to Geraty, authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI.
Responders transported the driver of the 2017 Honda to the hospital. She suffered injuries that were described as major. She was identified only as a resident of Reseda. Her name has not been reported.
Responders transported a man to the hospital with moderate injuries. He was identified only as a resident of Santa Maria, 53 years old. His name has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Dodge was reported to be uninjured. The identity of the person has not been reported.
