Series of Hit-and-run Crashes on Highway 99 Kills One Person in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 14, 2022) – Early in the morning on Tuesday in Bakersfield, a sequence of hit-and-run crashes killed a person. The January 11 crashes occurred on Highway 99.
The first collision occurred at roughly 2:07 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said, close to Merle Haggard Drive on the northbound side of the roadway.
A vehicle–described as a Plymouth Voyager–collided with two vehicles, which have not been described. The person who was driving the Plymouth fled the crash site and continued to travel north on Highway 99.
The Plymouth’s driver was involved in a second crash with a vehicle, described as a tractor-semi trailer.
The Plymouth’s driver abandoned the vehicle, which was disabled after the second crash, in the traffic lanes. The person walked to the center median and crossed over the barrier to the southbound side of the roadway.
The Plymouth’s driver was walking across the southbound lanes of Highway 99 when a big rig struck him. The truck driver did not stop, and left the scene of the crash.
Responders arrived and pronounced the Plymouth’s driver deceased at the crash site. His identity has not been reported.
Investigators are searching for the big rig driver, who has not been described.
None of the people involved in the two prior crashes have been identified. Reports do not say if anyone else was hurt in the series of crashes.
Investigators are working to understand each of the crashes, and they are collecting details. If anyone has information about the collisions, the person can call the California Highway Patrol’s Bakersfield area office.
