SANTA ANA, CA (July 12, 2018) – In a string of hit-and-run crashes Wednesday morning, a DUI driver injured four people and then kidnapped another person.
The crashes occurred at West 1st Street and Fairview Street in Santa Ana at roughly 3:00 a.m.
The series of crashes began when a witness saw a man, who was later identified as David Brihn, crash at Harbor Boulevard and McFadden Avenue. A person who was driving a white Honda sedan saw the crash happen. This caused Brihn to chase the witness.
A little while later, Brihn’s car, a Nissan Cube, and the Honda hit a GMC pickup truck. The impact forced the truck to overturn in mid-air. The truck then hit the ground roughly 60 to 80 feet from the point where it had initially been struck.
The collision caused the Honda’s driver to lose control. The Honda then struck a bicyclist who was waiting at the intersection’s stop sign.
Four people were injured because of the collision involving the three vehicles. The victims were two people who had been traveling in the Honda, the person who had been driving the GMC pickup truck, and the person who had been on the bicycle.
After the crash involving the three vehicles, Brihn, according to reports, exited his vehicle and strolled into an ice cream distribution company that was close by. At that place of business, he took an employee, Ignacio Morales, and kidnapped him.
According to reports, Brihn, who was described as 41 years old, tried to assure officials that Morales was the driver who was responsible for the collisions, and the one police sought.
Morales was not able to communicate with police to defend himself because English is not a language he understands or speaks.
Though Brihn tried to convince police that Morales was the responsible party, the police did not believe it. At that point, Brihn allegedly began to fight with the police officers.
Officers subdued Brihn by using a stun gun on him. They then took him into custody.
According to reports, police booked Brihn on charges that included suspicion of driving under the influence—also known as DUI—resisting arrest, felony hit-and-run, and kidnapping.
Reports indicated that Brihn may also have been under the influence of a substance described as a stimulant.
