Vehicle with Teen Driver Crashes in San Diego after Passenger Grasps Steering Wheel
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 20, 2021) – Late at night on Sunday in San Diego’s Point Loma Heights, a vehicle crashed and overturned, injuring two. The April 18 incident occurred on Nimitz Boulevard close to Voltaire Street.
The time was roughly 11:10 p.m., according to John Buttle.
A vehicle–described as a Ford Explorer SUV–had been heading north on Nimitz Boulevard in the left lane, and was being driven by a teen. Reports say that according to Buttle, a passenger in the SUV grasped the steering wheel and rotated it back and forth.
The action by the passenger caused the driver to react abruptly, and she moved the steering rightward, according to Buttle. The vehicle traveled into the lane on the right, and hit the structure of the bridge underneath Voltaire Street.
After striking the bridge structure, the SUV overturned. The passenger was thrown from the front seat. The SUV landed upside down.
Responders arrived and transported the two occupants of the vehicle to the hospital. They suffered injuries that included bones that were broken.
The driver was identified only as 17 years old. Her city of residence has not been reported.
The passenger who had been in the front seat has not been identified in reports.
Two other people had been traveling in the SUV when the crash occurred. Reports say they fled on foot before responders came to the scene. The two people have not been described or identified.
Investigators are continuing to work on the incident.
