San Diego Police Detectives Killed in I-5 Wrong-way Crash
SAN DIEGO, CA (June 8, 2021) – Ryan Park and Jamie Huntley-Park–both detectives with the San Diego Police Department–were killed in a crash on I-5 involving a wrong-way driver. The person suspected of driving the wrong way was also killed in the Friday crash.
Reports say new information has been disclosed about the crash. A witness–identified as Chris Rios–made available video from a dash cam. It recorded Rios’ vehicle moving from the lane he was traveling in on I-5 southbound.
It is alleged the maneuver was to avoid a collision with a Honda Civic that was traveling the wrong way on the freeway in the area by Dairy Mart Road. Reports say that according to Rios, he was traveling roughly 75 miles per hour. The Honda Civic may have been traveling 100 miles per hour, according to the estimation Rios is reported to have made.
It was reported that seconds after Rios’ moved his vehicle out of the way, the Honda Civic smashed head-on into a car in which the Parks were traveling. The two people were a married couple, reports say. They were killed in the crash.
The alleged wrong-way driver was also killed in the crash. She has not been identified in reports.
Investigators are continuing to work on understanding the crash. They are collecting information and details about the incident.
