Two Wrong-way Collisions in Orange County on the 91 Freeway Cause Injuries and Death
ORANGE COUNTY, CA (January 21, 2019) – Two wrong-way collisions, both of which occurred early in the morning on Sunday on the 91 Freeway in Orange County, caused injuries and death. The January 20 accidents were two separate incidents, with a wrong-way driver traveling in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, and another traveling in the westbound lanes of the freeway at separate times.
In the first wrong-way crash, which occurred at roughly 3:00 a.m., a driver was traveling east in the freeway’s lanes that head west. According to the California Highway Patrol, two vehicles collided close to Gypsum Canyon. After the initial collision, two other collisions, and possibly more, occurred when the traffic snarled. Reports say as many as five vehicles collided.
Respondents arrived on scene and transported four victims to hospitals. The names, ages, gender, and cities of residence of the victims have not been reported. The types of injuries suffered by the victims have not yet been reported. One person was said to be in serious condition. It is not known which vehicles the people were traveling in, and who was driving. It has not yet been reported who was driving the wrong-way on the freeway, which led to the initial accident.
In a separate wrong-way collision, which occurred at roughly 4:00 a.m., a driver was traveling west in the lanes of the freeway that head east. The vehicle crashed into the divider in the center of the freeway, close to Euclid. A person in the vehicle died.
Reports say that investigators think the person may have traveled several miles in the opposite direction of traffic before the vehicle smashed into the divider. After crashing, the vehicle erupted in flames. Firefighters extinguished the flames engulfing the vehicle. The driver died. The identity of the driver, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence have not yet been reported. Reports say that no additional vehicles collided in the incident.
