Nine-year-old Boy Dies in Moorpark Crash on Highway 118
MOORPARK, CA (August 17, 2018) – A nine-year-old boy died on Friday morning in a collision on Highway 118 outside of Moorpark. The August 10 accident occurred at roughly 8:00 a.m. when the vehicle the boy was traveling in, and a tractor-trailer, collided on the highway near Balcom Canyon Road.
Three other people were injured in the collision. The collision happened, California Highway Patrol says, when a vehicle—described as a 2014 Chevrolet sedan—tried to make a left turn from Balcom Canyon onto Highway 118 in the eastbound lane.
The car headed across both lanes of the highway, and then collided with a truck, described as a double-tanker, that had been heading westbound on the road.
The impact from the crash sent both vehicles spinning on the highway, and caused the tractor-trailer, which was hauling roughly 8,000 gallons of gasoline, to overturn.
The driver of the car was identified as Veronica Viveros, a 45 year old. She, and her children—identified as a boy nine years old, and a girl seven years old—each had injuries that were described as life threatening. Responders took the victims to Los Robles Regional Medical Center.
Officer Marco Marin of California Highway Patrol said the crash threw the 7 year old from the back seat. The child suffered head trauma, and leg injuries. According to Marin, the girl had not been wearing a seat belt.
The boy, a resident of Somis, had been seated in the back. He was wearing his seat belt when the crash happened. The boy died in the hospital.
The person who had been driving the tanker was identified as Moises Macias, a 65 year old resident of Los Angeles. Responders took him to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital, according to CHP. His injuries were described as moderate.
Investigators are continuing their search into the details of the crash.
