MISSION VIEJO, CA (November 8, 2018) – Mike Kreza, who was a captain with Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue, was struck by a vehicle on Saturday morning as he was riding a bicycle. Kreza, who suffered critical injuries, died on Monday.
The November 3 accident occurred on Alicia Parkway in Mission Viejo, close to Via Burgos. The time was roughly 8:00 a.m.
According to reports, Kreza had been cycling to train for an Ironman triathlon. He was hit by a van.
Reports say that Kreza suffered head and body injuries. Responders transported him to a hospital in a condition that was described as critical. Kreza died from his injuries in the morning on Monday. He had served 18 years with the fire department, and was not on duty at the time of the accident.
The person who had been driving the van—identified as 25-year-old Stephen Taylor Scarpa—stayed at the accident scene.
