Woman Fleeing DUI Arrest on Foot Struck and Killed on Highway 99 in Merced
MERCED, CA (March 21, 2019) – A woman who was attempting to flee from a DUI arrest on foot was struck and killed in Merced on Wednesday night. The March 20 accident occurred on Highway 99, near Franklin Road, and to the north of it, between Atwater and Merced.
The time was roughly 8:40 p.m.
Reports say that an officer from California Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle that had been traveling north on Highway 99. The officer was seeking to find out if the person was driving under the influence. Reports say the officer smelled alcohol, and made a radio call for another officer.
The driver—identified as a woman 26 years old and a resident of Merced—ran across the highway’s lanes that travel north. The officer ran after the woman as she fled across the lanes that head south. Reports say she ran back toward the traffic lanes that head north, and a vehicle hit her. The vehicle—described as a Honda—was driven by Mirelez Alyssa, 22 years old and a resident of Merced. The Honda was struck by a second Honda, driven by Xiong Mai, 25 years old and a resident of Merced.
According to reports, the woman who had been fleeing on foot died at the accident scene. Her name has not been reported.
Neither of the drivers were reported to have been injured. Where and how the vehicles collided has not been reported. Investigators are examining the details to understand the sequence of events of the accidents.
