Officer Trying to Help Man Walking on 10 Freeway in Los Angeles is Struck and Seriously Injured
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 31, 2021) – Early in the morning on Monday, an officer with the California Highway Patrol was struck and seriously injured as she attempted to stop a man from continuing to walk on the freeway. The March 29 incident occurred on the 10 Freeway.
The time was roughly 7:15 a.m., according to authorities.
A man was reported walking on the 10 Freeway on the westbound side, in the area near the exit for Crenshaw Boulevard. The incident site was at the border of Central Los Angeles and South Los Angeles.
The California Highway Patrol officer found the person–described as a man, 25 years old–walking at the center divider of the freeway, not far from the exit for Arlington Avenue.
The officer exited her patrol vehicle, reports say and told the man to stop walking. The man went over the wall of the center divider, and ran through the freeway’s lanes that head east.
The officer tried to have the man leave the freeway in a safe manner, according to reports, but a vehicle that was heading east in the number 1 lane struck her.
Responders arrived to help the officer, who suffered injuries that were described as major. They transported her to Cedar’s Sinai Medical Center.
She was identified only as 30 years old. Her name has not been reported.
According to reports, drivers who saw the incident stopped the fleeing man, and detained him until authorities arrived. Authorities arrested the man, who has not been identified.
Investigators are continuing their work of gathering information and details regarding the case.
