Helicopter Crash on Hospital Roof in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights Area Injures Pilot
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 9, 2020) – On Friday afternoon, a medical helicopter crashed onto the Keck Hospital of USC’s rooftop, injuring the pilot. The November 6 incident occurred on the roof of the fifth floor of the building.
The time was roughly a little after 3:00 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
The medical helicopter–described as an AgustaWestland A109–had been en route to deliver a organ that had been donated. The helicopter laned on the helipad of the building, according to Emma Duncan, who is a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson.
According to reports, the helicopter was on its side. The tail of the helicopter was suspended over the helipad’s boundary, close to the edge of the building.
The pilot was injured in the crash. The person is reported to have suffered injuries that were described as minor.
The identity of the pilot, including name, age, and city of residence, has not bee reported.
Two other occupants of the helicopter did not want to be treated. Their identities have also not been reported.
The organ was obtained by firefighters, who delivered it to medical staff of the hospital.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board are working on collecting details to understand why the crash happened.
