Driver Crashes and Dies in Gramercy Park Neighborhood of Los Angeles; Street Racing Possible Cause
LOS ANGELES, CA (September 27, 2019) – A man crashed and died early in the morning on Thursday in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, and street racing may have been a cause. The September 26 incident occurred on Western Avenue close to 93rd Street.
The time was a little after 12:00 a.m.
Reports say the incident was captured on video from a surveillance camera in the area. In the video, a Mazda, which had been going at a fast speed, smashed into a van parked on the street. Another vehicle, dark in color, can be seen going at a fast speed past the crash site.
In the video, the person driving the Mazda seems to lose control of it, according to investigators. The vehicle then goes into the lane of opposing traffic and crashes.
Responders arrived and discovered the driver of the Mazda was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighters worked to extricate the man. He was taken to a hospital where, police say, he was pronounced deceased. The driver was identified only as 29 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Investigators are continuing to gather information and details. They are searching for the person driving the vehicle that went past the incident site in the video. The vehicle was described as a sedan, black in color. It is not known if street racing contributed to the incident.
