Hit-and-run Driver Hits and Drags Elias Sanchez in Long Beach, Killing Him
LONG BEACH, CA (January 9, 2019) – A hit-and-run driver struck Elias Sanchez Monday night in Long Beach, and dragged him. Sanchez died from his injuries. The January 7 accident occurred where Paramount Boulevard and South Street intersect.
The time was roughly 7:50 p.m.
According to reports, Sanchez—a 79-year-old resident of Long Beach—had been walking in a marked crosswalk when the pedestrian signal was green for him. Officials from Long Beach Police said a cargo van—that had been traveling west on South Street—made a turn onto Paramount Boulevard. The van hit Sanchez.
The van dragged Sanchez roughly 900 feet down the street. The person who had been driving the van did not stop and stay at the accident scene, or call for help.
Reports say the van left Sanchez lying in the road. Another vehicle, that was traveling down the road, attempted to avoid striking Sanchez, but could not miss hitting him.
The person who had been driving the second vehicle remained at the accident scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police described the van as either a 1970s to 1980s Ford or Chevy, white in color. It is a cargo or utility van. A ladder is located on the back door, similar in kind to those on RV trailers. The rear of the van has writing in a green color.
