Fatal Chain-Reaction Crash on 405 Fwy Leaves 1 Dead
LONG BEACH, CA (August 26, 2024) — Authorities have identified 58-year-old James Larea Hurd, Sr. of Carson as the driver killed in a chain-reaction crash on the 405 Freeway near Lakewood Boulevard Monday morning.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on August 26, near Lakewood Boulevard. A southbound 2010 Honda Fit, driven by Hurd, was traveling at high speed when it failed to slow down for stopped traffic and rear-ended another vehicle. The impact set off a chain reaction, involving three more vehicles.
James Hurd Sr. Was Pronounced Dead At The Scene of the Crash
Emergency crews arrived on the scene but pronounced Hurd dead at the site of the crash. A child involved in the incident sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
CHP continues to investigate the cause of the accident and is expected to release further details as they become available.
