Teen Killed in Fiery Semi-Truck Crash on 710 Fwy in Long Beach
Long Beach, CA (May 13, 2024) — A dramatic accident involving a stolen car and a big rig on the 710 Freeway near Anaheim Street resulted in one fatality and several injuries late Monday night, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. when officers attempted to pursue a stolen 2020 Kia near Jaymills Avenue. The pursuit was joined by a Long Beach Police Department helicopter, which tracked the vehicle’s movements.
15 Year Old Driver Made Fatal Decision To Try To Exit Freeway In Front of Semi Truck
The chase came to a tragic end when the stolen Kia attempted to cut in front of a 2024 Freightliner, possibly to exit the freeway at the Anaheim Street off-ramp. The collision sparked a fire, and Long Beach Fire Department personnel quickly arrived on the scene to rescue the four occupants from the burning car: the 15-year-old driver, two 13-year-old girls, and a 14-year-old.
All four occupants were transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. Tragically, the 15-year-old driver later succumbed to his injuries.
Truck Driver Was Able To Walk Away From Crash Without Injury
Alvaro Patino, 22, of Paramount, who was driving the Freightliner, escaped injury in the crash.
The accident led to the closure of all northbound lanes of the 710 Freeway for several hours as officers conducted their investigation. Authorities are seeking any additional information from witnesses and urge those with insights into the crash to contact Long Beach Police.
