Driver Fleeing Deputies Collides with MTS Bus in Encinitas
ENCINITAS, CA (March 2, 2021) – On Saturday night, an MTS bus in Encinitas was involved in a collision with a driver who was fleeing from deputies. The February 27 crash occurred at Encinitas Boulevard.
The time was roughly around 9:00 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Not long before the crash, Sheriff’s deputies saw a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Capalina Road and Rancho Santa Fe Road, reports say. According to authorities, deputies attempted to have the driver pull over, but the person driving the suspected stolen vehicle drove off.
Deputies pursued the suspect driver through multiple cities, including Vista, Carlsbad, and Encinitas. After pulling off of I-5, according to authorities, the suspect driver was involved in a collision with an MTS bus at Encinitas Boulevard.
The suspect driver was reported to have exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The vehicle continued moving forward and crashed into a guardrail. According to deputies, a passenger was still inside the vehicle.
Responders transported the passenger to a hospital. She suffered injuries that were described as minor. Her identity has not been reported.
No one on the Metropolitan Transit System bus was reported to have been injured in the crash.
Authorities arrested the suspect driver for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony evasion. He was identified as Jesus Padilla, 21 years old.
Investigators are continuing to work on the incident.
