San Diego Driver Arrested in Crash that Killed Couple
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 11, 2022) – Ahmed Mazin Salah Alrawi and Suad Alsamari were identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office as the two victims who were killed in a crash last week involving a driver suspected of DUI. The May 7 crash occurred on Sports Arena Boulevard in the 2900 block close to Rosecrans Street.
The time was roughly 9:00 p.m., San Diego Police said.
Reports say the suspect driver–identified as Edgar Suarez Espinosa, 33 years old–had been driving at a fast speed in a Toyota Tacoma on Sports Area Boulevard. Authorities allege Espinosa traveled over the median, and the vehicle he was driving flew up and landed on the top of a van.
The van had been waiting for a light that was red.
Two people who had been seated in the back of the van were killed in the crash. They were first identified only as a woman, 81 years old, and a man, 23 years old.
The Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victims as Suad Alsamari, 81 years old; and Ahmed Mazin Salah Alrawi, 23 years old.
Two other people who had been in the van suffered injuries that were described as severe. The driver was identified only as 21 years old. The name, gender, and city of residence of the victim have not been reported.
A passenger who was injured was identified only as 46 years old. The person’s full identity is not known from reports.
Authorities booked Espinosa on felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, and driving without a license, according to Adam Sharki. Sharki is a lieutenant with San Diego Police. Espinosa also suffered serious injuries in the crash.
