Dick Van Dyke is thanking his lucky stars this week. The longtime actor’s Jaguar went up in smoke on Monday afternoon on the side of the freeway.
A man stopped by the shoulder to rescue the 87-year-old star. Jason Pennington, told TMZ, a celebrity news organization, that as he was cruising along the 101 freeway in Los Angeles, he saw Van Dyke’s sports car burst into flames. Once Pennington stopped, he found Van Dyke hunched over the wheel of the vehicle. Pennington quickly worked to free him and help him out of the car as Van Dyke was already struggling to escape from the burning vehicle. Van Dyke was passing Calabasas at the time of the accident.
Helped by two off-duty nurses, Pennington swiftly opened the driver door and pulled the Mary Poppins star from the vehicle as flames tore through its engine. Van Dyke did not require medical attention and was said to be recovering well at home after his wife, Arlene, arrived on the scene to pick him up. The Hollywood Reporter says the actor may not actually have been aware his car was on fire prior to the rescue. Two eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for a short time, according to local police.
The car was burnt to a crisp as can be seen in photos of the accident scene.
According to officials, Van Dyke did not need medical care so he was brought home by his wife shortly after the accident. He did seem slightly disoriented following the incident, but that could be attributed to his age.
It is unclear what caused the fire or incident and officials will be investigating the scene for further information regarding the accident that almost took the life of the legendary entertainer and actor.
