Tow Truck Driver Severely Injured in Crash on 55 Freeway Near 405 Freeway
COSTA MESA, CA (August 19, 2024) – A tow truck driver suffered major injuries, including the loss of his left leg, after being struck by a speeding car on the 55 Freeway near the 405 Freeway early Monday morning.
The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Authorities reported that the driver of a two-door black sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle collided with the tow truck driver, who was standing outside his truck at the time of the crash.
Multiple Bystanders To Assist The Injured Driver
Bystanders quickly pulled over to assist the injured driver until emergency services arrived. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
In response to the incident, authorities issued a SigAlert around 3:09 a.m., closing the northbound lanes of the freeway to conduct an investigation and clear the scene.
The CHP is urging anyone with information that could aid in the investigation to come forward.

Officials remind motorists to exercise caution, especially during late-night driving when visibility is reduced. Drivers should slow down and be alert for vehicles pulled over on the side of the road, as well as for pedestrians. Pedestrians are also advised to enhance their visibility by using well-lit roads and wearing bright-colored clothing.
