Costa Mesa Multi-vehicle Crash on Newport Blvd. Causes Injuries; DUI Suspected
COSTA MESA, CA (July 28, 2020) – On Monday morning in Costa Mesa, a crash involving multiple vehicles caused injuries. DUI is suspected in the July 27 incident, which occurred on Newport Boulevard close to 19th Street.
The time was roughly 10:48 a.m., according to Roxi Fyad. Fyad is a spokesperson with Costa Mesa Police.
Reports say witnesses saw a vehicle going in the wrong direction on Newport Boulevard, traveling southbound in the north lanes. The wrong-way vehicle is suspected of colliding with a number of other vehicles–at least six–none of which has been described.
Responders arrived and transported four patients to trauma centers in the area, according to Joseph Noceti. Noceti is a captain with Costa Mesa Fire. Responders had to work to extricate one person who was trapped in a wrecked vehicle.
None of the victims have been identified, including names, ages, gender and cities of residence. It is not known what types of injuries they suffered, or their current condition.
Reports say a driver who is suspected of DUI, and of having caused the crash was arrested, according to Fyad. The suspect was identified as Fernando Rodriguez Rabago, 24 years old.
Investigators are continuing their work in gathering information and details regarding the crash.
