Chula Vista Wrong-way Street Racer Collides Head On with Car, Killing Woman, Injuring Children
CHULA VISTA, CA (June 7, 2021) – Early in the evening on Saturday in Chula Vista, a suspected street racer, who had been traveling the wrong way, collided head on with a car. The crash, which occurred on L Street, killed a woman and injured two children.
The time was roughly 6:00 p.m., Chula Vista Police said.
Reports say that according to people who witnessed the crash, two street racers were racing against one another and going at a fast speed. The suspected street racers had been westbound on L Street.
One of the suspected street racers–who was driving a Ford Mustang, silver in color–went through a light that was red, and traveled in the lane of opposing traffic. The Mustang collided head on with a vehicle–described as a Nissan Altima–where Third Avenue and L Street intersect.
The driver of the Nissan was killed in the crash. Her name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
Two children who had been traveling with her were injured in the collision. A Good Samaritan rescued the children from the wreckage, reports say, until responders arrived.
The two children were identified only as boys. The woman who was killed may have been the boys’ grandmother, according to a witness.
Authorities arrested the person who had been driving the Mustang on suspicion of street racing. The person has not been identified in reports.
Investigators are searching for the other vehicle suspected of street racing, described as a Subaru WRX, white in color. They are also searching for the person who had been driving the vehicle during the suspected street race.
