Motorcycle Police Officer Injured in Hit-and-run on I-15 in Bonsall
BONSALL, CA (December 5, 2018) – A hit-and-run driver struck an El Cajon police officer who was riding his motorcycle on I-15 in Bonsall early Tuesday morning. The December 4 accident knocked the officer down onto the freeway.
Reports say that the officer, who was in uniform and on his way to work, had been traveling southbound when a vehicle struck him at roughly 6:30 a.m.
The accident occurred near Camino del Rey, the California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle—described as a Ford Fusion, silver in color—sideswiped him from the driver’s side. The person who had been driving the vehicle—identified as a man wearing eyeglasses—continued down the freeway, and drove off at the exit for Gopher Canyon Road, Mark Latulippe said. Latulippe is a public affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol.
The El Cajon police officer picked up his motorcycle, and rode to work. Reports say he suffered minor injuries.
Two people who had witnessed the accident pursued the damaged vehicle and attempted to box the vehicle off using their cars. The hit-and-run driver eluded the pursuers, and escaped by driving back on I-15 southbound.
According to reports, the car had license plates that were blue paper from El General Auto Dealer, which is located in Colton. The car is probably a model year 2010, 2011, or 2012. Latulippe said that authorities are investigating the vehicle, and it is not clear if the vehicle was purchased or stolen.
CHP says it believes that the driver knew he had collided with the motorcycle officer. Investigators are continuing their examination of the information.
