Crash Involving Two Big Rigs on 15 Freeway Near Barstow Kills Truck Driver and Good Samaritan
BARSTOW, CA (January 20, 2020) – A crash on the 15 Freeway involving two big rigs, one of which was carrying hazardous chemicals, killed a truck driver and a Good Samaritan who tried to help. The January 19 incident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway near Barstow, near Hodge Road and to the south of it.
The time was roughly 4:15 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say the person driving the first big rig, for reasons that are not known, lost control of the vehicle. The truck went to the right off the road, and while traveling back to the road, it overturned.
The truck landed on its side, blocking part of the number 3 lane. A person who had been driving a Mazda stopped his vehicle when he came to the scene of the crash. The driver ran to assist the victim in the truck.
A second big rig came upon the crash site and smashed into the overturned big rig. The impact caused the first big rig to erupt in flames. The driver of the big rig that was on fire died.
The Good Samaritan ended up beneath the second big rig. The victim was pronounced deceased at the incident site, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol.
Neither the truck driver nor the Good Samaritan who were killed have been identified in reports, including names, ages, and cities of residence.
Responders transported the driver of the big rig who was injured to a hospital. The types of injuries he suffered and his current condition are not known. He was identified only as 52 years old, and a resident of Tennessee.
Investigators are working to understand what circumstances were involved in the crash.
