If Your Car Breaks Down On A Busy Road, How Should You Exit Your Vehicle?

If your car breaks down on a busy road, exit your vehicle safely by following these steps:

  1. Activate Hazard Lights: Immediately turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers that your vehicle is experiencing issues.
  2. Move to the Right Shoulder: If possible, steer your vehicle to the right shoulder or emergency lane. This reduces the risk of being in the path of oncoming traffic.
  3. Stay Inside Initially: While on the shoulder, it’s generally safer to stay inside your vehicle, especially if you are on a high-speed road. Keep your seatbelt fastened and assess the situation from the safety of your car.
  4. Call for Assistance: Use your mobile phone to call for roadside assistance, a tow truck, or emergency services if needed. Provide your location and details about the situation.
  5. Evaluate Surroundings: Assess the traffic conditions before deciding to exit the vehicle. If the road is busy and there’s no immediate danger, it may be safer to wait inside until help arrives.
  6. Exit Safely: If you need to exit the vehicle, do so on the side away from traffic. Open the door facing away from the road, and exit cautiously. Stand well away from the traffic flow.
  7. Stay Visible: Make yourself visible to other drivers by wearing reflective clothing or using a flashlight if it’s dark. Ensure your hazard lights remain on.
  8. Use Warning Devices: If you have warning triangles or flares, place them behind your vehicle to provide additional warning to approaching drivers.
  9. Be Cautious and Alert: Watch for oncoming traffic and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid standing directly behind or in front of your vehicle.

Remember, safety is the top priority. If you are unsure about the situation or feel unsafe, it’s generally best to stay inside your vehicle and wait for professional assistance.
