Boy Identified as 13 Year Old Hit and Killed by Vehicle in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 3, 2019) – Alejandro Vargas, Jr. was identified as the boy who was hit and killed by a vehicle on Sunday in Bakersfield. The June 30 incident occurred on Niles Street.
The time was roughly 7:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say Vargas was with other teenagers who had been standing on Niles Street, close to a bus stop and on the road’s shoulder near the Park Drive intersection. The teenagers started to cross Niles Street in an area that is not within a crosswalk.
As the teenagers were running to beat traffic, three of them saw a vehicle approaching and turned back. According to the California Highway Patrol, Vargas did not see the approaching vehicle, and it hit him.
Responders arrived on scene and took Vargas to Kern Medical Hospital where he died. He was 13 years old and a resident of Bakersfield, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
People who witnessed the incident said the vehicle had been traveling at the speed limit. Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The person who had been driving the vehicle has not been identified in reports. Investigators are continuing their work in understanding the accident.
