13 Car Pileup on 5 Fwy in the Grapevine

Disaster struck the 5 Freeway as a multi-vehicle collision closed down all northbound lanes of the Grapevine Tuesday night, May 8th. The initial crash occurred just before 9:00 p.m. when 2 big rigs collided into each other causing one of the big rigs to overturn and block traffic near the East Escape Ramp along the major stretch of the north-south corridor known as the Grapevine that connects Los Angeles to the San Joaquin Valley.
The overturned big rig quickly caught fire due to the fact its payload 120 cases of local wine from the Fort Tejon area, just north of Lebec. Shortly after California Highway Patrol and fire crews arrived on scene, a 3rd big rig slammed into 11 vehicles that were backed up waiting for the freeway to clear. Luckily there were only 3 minor injuries were reported during the second chain-reaction collision and all 3 drivers of the big rigs escaped unharmed. CHP officials closed that portion of the 5 freeway causing massive traffic jams that stretched for miles as cleanup crews worked through the night into the morning. The 5 freeway was fully reopened by 8:30 a.m.
