6 Injured in Rollover DUI Crash in Hollywood

6 people were injured, with 3 hospitalized in critical condition, after a suspected DUI driver slammed into an Uber sending it careening into a business in Hollywood on New Year’s Day. The DUI driver attempted to flee the scene but was detained by witnesses. According to Los Angeles Police Department’s incident log, the collision occurred just before 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Gardner Street in the Fairfax district and involved a black Mercedes SUV and Toyota Prius driven by an Uber driver transporting 4 passengers.
According to witnesses on scene, The Mercedes SUV was speeding south on Vista Street before running a red light and broadsiding the Toyota Prius. The Prius then crashed into a window of a sporting apparel business, FampionX, which had its façade damaged. The Mercedes SUV crashed into the same sporting apparel store causing the vehicle to flip over and come to rest on its roof. Good Samaritans, including 2 tow truck drivers, tried to help extricate the Uber driver and the 3 victims. They said the driver in the Mercedes SUV attempted to flee the scene. But the good Samaritans chased the man, tackled him, called 911, and held him until authorities arrived. LAPD investigators were looking into whether the suspect was also responsible for side-swiping 4 vehicles on Franklin Avenue minutes before the collision.
All 6 victims were transported to local trauma centers with 3 listed in critical but stable condition. The victims comprised of 3 men and 3 women all adults ranging in age from late 20s to early 30s. The Uber driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released shortly after treatment. The suspect was also treated with minor injuries and was released into LAPD custody. The driver has been charged with felony DUI, according to an LAPD spokesperson.
L.A.’s Building and Safety department responded to evaluate the structure which was hit by the Prius after the impact of the crash. Authorities were trying to locate the owner of a sports apparel store, where the Prius careened into after the crash. The Prius damaged a load-bearing wall and the business will not be open for some time.
