Nineteen people have been killed by accidents caused by faulty GM ignition switches in older GM cars it has been reported.
Claims indicate that these numbers could grow to over one hundred. This is according to information gathered by a consultant hired by GM.
Nineteen people have been killed in crashes involving older GM cars. There have been four “category one” claims (involving paralysis, double amputation, permanent brain damage or burns). There have been eight “category two” claims (hospitalization or outpatient treatment within two days of the crash.
The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration has estimated that the statistics will reveal higher casualties. There are hundreds of claims to review. This could cause the numbers to grow.
There have been 445 claims. There have been 125 claims for deaths. There have been 58 claims for serious injuries. There have been 262 claims for brief hospitalizations.
Two point six million GM vehicles are being recalled for faulty ignition switches. The faulty switches can cause some of the cars’ vital operations to suddenly shut down.
GM is reported to have known about the issue for ten years. They decided only this year to make the recall. GM says that they accept the blame for the problem. There is an ongoing investigation by NHTSA and Congress.
The deadline to submit a claim is December 31, 2014.
