Triple Murder Suspect Could Face Death Penalty

A Riverside man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and their two young children after she rejected his marriage proposal is set to be arraigned in court Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Selvin Chajon Rodriguez, 23, faces three counts of murder, two counts of assault of a child causing death, two counts of making criminal threats and one count each of attempted carjacking, burglary and vehicle theft, according to a statement issued by John Hall, a spokesman for the Riverside County district attorney’s office.
Rodriguez could be eligible for the death penalty because of a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, according to the statement.
Investigators believe Rodriguez killed his ex-girlfriend, Laura Reveriano, 25, because she rejected his marriage proposal, based on a restraining order filed days before the deaths. Early Thursday, Reveriano and her children, Selvin Chajon, 4, and Emily Chajon, 1, were found stabbed in her home on a quiet cul-de-sac in west Riverside.
Rodriguez, 23, was found minutes later, with bloody hands, walking along the 91 Freeway and carrying a knife, police said. He was later seen in a business complex parking lot near the freeway trying to carjack a vehicle, officials said.
Rodriguez was shot by a Corona police officer during a foot chase and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is still being held in a jail ward, officials said. He was reportedly in stable condition.
Rodriguez called Reveriano repeatedly and sent her a constant stream of threatening text messages, Reveriano wrote in a request for a domestic violence restraining order filed last week in a Riverside court.
“Selvin called and told me he would follow me to the end of the earth and he would kill the kids if they are not with him and there would be nowhere I could hide,” Reveriano wrote.
A Riverside County judge granted the temporary restraining order Aug. 28, saying Rodriguez had to stay at least 100 yards away from Reveriano and her children and could not contact them, according to court papers.
Two days later, Reveriano and her children were found dead.
