Two Killed in Crash on I-10 in Cathedral City
CATHEDRAL CITY, CA (July 10, 2025) — A tragic multi-vehicle crash involving a big rig claimed the lives of two people Thursday morning on eastbound Interstate 10 near Date Palm Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred around 6:48 a.m. on July 10, when a big rig reportedly crossed over from the westbound lanes, overturned, and landed on its side in the eastbound lanes. The violent impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles and led to a full closure of all eastbound lanes.
Many Agencies Responded Together To Investigate And Clear The Lanes
Emergency personnel, including Cal Fire, CHP units, and paramedics, rushed to the scene. By 7:05 a.m., authorities confirmed at least two fatalities. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office was called to respond.
Due to the severity of the crash and the presence of a commercial truck, hazmat teams were notified over concerns about the truck’s cargo. Officials also activated Changeable Message Signs (CMS) to divert traffic and alert commuters of the major closure.
Eastbound Interstate 10 Was Shutdown For Several Hours
A SigAlert was issued shortly after the incident, warning that eastbound lanes of I-10 would remain shut down for several hours while investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage. Plaza Tow II and a heavy-duty tow truck were dispatched to assist in the recovery operation.
Traffic quickly backed up near Date Palm Drive, and authorities urged drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
