Illegal Street Race On 60 Freeway Ends In Police Pursuit and Death of Innocent Truck Driver
CORONA, CA (April 14, 2025) – Modesto Daniel Carpio, 22, a suspected street racer is facing murder charges after a high-speed pursuit ended in a deadly collision on a Corona freeway, authorities announced Monday.
Modesto Daniel Carpio, of San Jacinto, was arrested Sunday and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony evading. He is being held on $1 million bail, and his case is expected to be reviewed soon by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
CHP Officers Responded To Calls of Illegal Street Race Blocking Lanes On 60 Freeway
The deadly incident began shortly before midnight on Saturday, when California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of an illegal street race blocking lanes on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway near Euclid Avenue in Ontario.
CHP officers arriving at the scene identified Carpio behind the wheel of an Infiniti sports car allegedly involved in the race. When officers attempted a traffic stop, Carpio reportedly fled at high speed, heading south on Interstate 15 into Riverside County.
Carpio Exceeded Speeds of 100 MPH While Fleeing From Police
“Carpio accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph and transitioned onto the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway,” said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez. “While fleeing at high speed, the Infiniti collided with a semi-truck hauling a trailer just east of Lincoln Avenue.”
Stephen Palacios of Rancho Cucamonga Was The Semi-Truck Driver Killed In The Crash
The impact of the crash forced the semi-truck into a freeway sound wall and ejected the driver, 55-year-old Stephen Palacios of Rancho Cucamonga. He was found in critical condition by paramedics from the Corona Fire Department and transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
A passenger in the truck, whose identity has not been released, sustained moderate injuries and was also hospitalized. He is expected to recover.
Carpio, who was uninjured in the crash, was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.
As of Monday, it was unclear whether other participants in the illegal street race had been identified or apprehended.
