One Dead, Another Injured in Head-On Crash Near Merced
MERCED COUNTY, CA (March 7, 2025) — A man was killed, and another was seriously injured following a head-on collision early Friday morning in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred at approximately 2:11 a.m. in the area of Santa Fe Drive, west of Avenue 2, and involved a 2006 BMW sedan and a 2012 Chevy sedan.
A BMW Veered Into The Wrong Lane Before The Crash
According to CHP investigators, a 20-year-old man from Planada was driving his BMW eastbound on Santa Fe Drive at an unknown speed. Meanwhile, a man from Atwater was traveling westbound in his Chevy at around 45 mph. For reasons still under investigation, the BMW suddenly veered left into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the Chevy in the westbound lane.
Authorities confirmed that the BMW driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevy sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Modesto for treatment. Officials noted that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and cooperated with law enforcement.
CHP Investigators Are Still Determining The Cause of The Crash
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
This fatal incident marks the second deadly collision in about a week at Santa Fe Drive and Avenue 2. On February 27, another crash in the same area resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Winton man, while two others were seriously injured.
Authorities urge drivers to remain cautious in the area and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the CHP.
