Head-on Crash on Avenida de la Fuente in Otay Mesa Injures Driver San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 9, 2022) – On Tuesday night in San Diego, a head-on crash in the area of Otay Mesa seriously injured a driver. The February 8 crash occurred on Avenida de la Fuente in the 8400 block, close to Avenida Costa del Sol.
The time was roughly 7:50 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
A vehicle–described as a pickup truck–collided with a semi-truck head on. The force of the crash sent the pickup to smash into a building.
Responders worked to free the driver from the wreckage. The patient was transported by airlift to the hospital, Chris Babler said. Babler is a battalion chief with San Diego Fire-Rescue.
The patient suffered injuries that were described as serious. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
Hazmat crews worked to clean diesel fuel that spilled from the accident. Crews also worked to repair a light pole that was knocked over.
Reports do not say if the driver of the semi-truck was injured. The person has not been identified.
The extent of the damage to the building that was struck is also not known.
Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
