Man Identified as Marine Struck and Killed on I-5 While Helping Crash Victims Near Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, CA (December 8, 2021) – Alberto Lucio was identified as the Marine who was struck and killed in Oceanside on I-5 while helping crash victims. He was 20 years old.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first crash occurred on I-5 southbound. A vehicle–described as a Ford Edge–had crashed close to Las Pulgas Road.
The driver–identified as Darryl Sheffey, 36 years old–left the vehicle in the lanes of traffic. Lights were not illuminated on the vehicle, authorities said.
Not long after the first crash, Lucio came to the aid of Sheffey and a passenger who had been traveling with him, identified only as a woman 31 years old.
As Lucio was helping the couple, a vehicle–described as a box truck–crashed into the disabled Ford and Lucio.
Camp Pendleton Fire Personnel arrived on scene and pronounced Lucio deceased at the crash site.
Responders transported Sheffey and the passenger who had been traveling with him to a hospital. They suffered injuries that were described as major. Their current condition is not known.
Authorities arrested Sheffey on multiple felonies, according to reports.
The person who had been driving the box truck was identified only as 41 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work on the two crashes.
