Chula Vista Woman Killed in Head-on Crash with Suspected Street Racer
CHULA VISTA, CA (June 8, 2021) – Martha Bertha Villalobos Romo was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner as the woman who was killed in a head-on crash involving a suspected street racer. The June 5 incident occurred on L Street.
The time was roughly 6:00 p.m., Chula Vista Police said.
According to Chula Vista Police, two suspected street racers had been traveling at a fast speed on L Street. One of the alleged street racers–who was driving a Ford Mustang, silver in color–went through a light that was red.
The Mustang traveled in the lane of opposing traffic, and collided head-on with a Nissan Altima in the area where Third Avenue intersects, according to Chula Vista Police.
Villalobos Romo had been driving the Nissan. She was killed in the crash. She was 57 years old.
Two boys–the grandchildren of Villalobos Romo–were in the back seat of the Nissan when the crash occurred. Reports say the boys suffered injuries that were described as minor. They are 7 and 10 years of age.
People who witnessed the crash are reported to have told police that the Mustang had been traveling in a reckless manner. Authorities arrested a person who is suspected of driving the Mustang. He was identified as Alonso Pina, 22 years old.
Investigators are continuing their search for the other suspected street racer, and the vehicle involved. A description of the vehicle says it is a Subaru WRX, white in color.
