Driver Fleeing Bakersfield Police Collides with Vehicle, Causing Injuries
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 28, 2021) – A driver who was fleeing police pursuit–later identified as Jay Hanby, 35 years old–collided with a vehicle in Bakersfield. The May 27 crash occurred in the area of Planz Road and South H Street.
The time was roughly 12:10 a.m., Bakersfield Police said.
The incident began in the vicinity of Airport Drive and Olive Drive, when officers tried to pull over a vehicle–described as a BMW–that appeared to have bullet holes in it. Reports say that according to the officers, the BMW resembled a description of a vehicle that had been at the scene of a shooting on Ming Avenue on May 4.
According to reports, the person driving the BMW did not stop for the officers, and fled the area, at times going over 100 miles per hour. Due to the unsafe speeds on city streets, reports say, officers stopped the pursuit.
In the area of Planz Road and South H Street, the BMW collided with another vehicle, which has not been described. Reports say Hanby tried to run from the crashed BMW.
Officers arrested Hanby on suspicion of evading police, violating the terms of his parole, and hit-and-run.
Responders transported a person who had been traveling in the other vehicle to a hospital. The types of injuries the person suffered, and current condition, are not known. The person has not been identified in reports.
Responders also transported Hanby to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
Investigators are continuing to work on the incident.
