Santa Barbara Bus Collides with Suspect in Stolen Vehicle, Injuring Eight
SANTA BARBARA, CA (May 18, 2021) – Eight people were injured early in the afternoon on Saturday in Santa Barbara when a suspect in a stolen vehicle collided with a city bus. The May 15 crash occurred where Islay Street and State Street intersect.
The time was roughly 12:30 p.m., according to police.
The incident began, reports say, when an officer with Santa Barbara Police saw a vehicle that had been reported as stolen in the vicinity of West Micheltorena Street and Andres Street. The officer tried to make a traffic stop, reports say, but the person driving–later identified as Jose Munoz, a resident of Santa Barbara 24 years old–fled the area.
According to authorities, reports say, Munoz was seen committing a number of traffic violations as he drove. The officer saw the stolen vehicle and the MTD bus had collided, according to reports.
Reports say Munoz is suspected of going through the stop sign without stopping when the crash occurred.
Responders arrived and found two people inside the stolen vehicle suffered injuries that were described as serious. Responders transported the two patients to a hospital.
According to reports, two passengers in the stolen vehicle were described as juvenile teenagers. Responders took one of the juvenile passengers to Cottage Hospital. The current condition of the teen is not known.
Responders also took Munoz to Cottage Hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been reported.
Six people who had been passengers on the bus suffered injuries that were described as minor. None of the people have been identified in reports.
Authorities arrested Munoz on suspicion of DUI collision causing injury, possession of a stolen vehicle, evading, and child endangerment.
Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
