Pedestrian Struck in Florence Area of South L.A. Dies; 2 Hit-and-run Drivers Sought
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 15, 2021) – A pedestrian who was struck by two hit-and-run drivers in South Los Angeles on Monday was still alive when the second vehicle hit him, according to video that captured the incident. The April 12 crashes occurred close to where 70th Street and Main Street intersect in the Florence neighborhood.
The time was roughly 1:20 a.m., Los Angeles Police said.
A vehicle–described as a two-door car, light in color–which had been traveling southbound on Main Street hit the pedestrian first. The force of the crash threw the victim, and he came down on the ground in the lanes on the northbound side of the road.
Video that captured the incident shows the driver who hit the man did not stop to help him, according to police. After the first crash, another person drove near the victim, stopped her car, and exited.
Police said it appeared the driver was trying to help the injured man, who was still moving at that time, and who could be heard on the video calling out for help.
The second driver left after talking to the victim, according to police. A third vehicle–described as a Toyota Prius, light in color, which may have been a taxi–approached. It also stopped close to the victim who was lying in the roadway.
While the driver of the Prius was with the injured man, a fourth vehicle–described as dark in color–which had been northbound on Main Street, went over the man, dragging him approximately 60 feet. The fourth driver did not stop to help the victim, but left the crash site.
The driver of the Prius also left the crash site. A fifth driver, who had stopped in back of the Prius, could be seen on the video pursuing the second hit-and-run vehicle.
Responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to help, but the victim died at the crash site. He was identified only as 35 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Police are searching for the two hit-and-run drivers and their vehicles, as well as the three drivers who tried to help the victim who are considered witnesses.
