Boy, 11 Years Old, Injured by Hit-and-run Driver in South-Central Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 26, 2021) – Late in the afternoon on Thursday in South-Central Los Angeles, a boy–11 years old–was injured by a hit-and-run driver. The boy was identified by family as Frank Portillo. The March 25 incident occurred at East 42nd Street, near McKinley Avenue and to the east of it.
The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., Los Angeles Police said.
Video recorded by a surveillance camera captured the boy running on a sidewalk, reports say, chasing down an ice cream truck that was passing by. The boy comes to a stop, looks both ways, and then goes across the roadway.
While the boy was running in the road, a vehicle–described as a Chevrolet Tahoe, beige or gray in color–hit him.
The person who had been driving the SUV stopped right away, reports say, exited the vehicle, and checked on the boy in the street. The man went back into his vehicle and left the crash site, according to reports.
Responders transported Frank Portillo to a hospital in the area. He suffered injuries that were described as severe.
Investigators are searching for the vehicle, which has a California license plate with the number 6SEZ288, and was reported stolen on Sunday to the Rampart Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspect driver has not been described.
