Man Identified as Victim Killed when Car Crashes into Homeless Area in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2021) – Rodney Diffendal was identified by authorities as one of the victims who was killed when a vehicle veered onto a San Diego sidewalk and struck a homeless camp. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Officer said Diffendal was 40 years old.
The March 15 incident occurred on B Street, close to 16 Street, where it passes through a tunnel. A vehicle–described as a station wagon–veered onto the sidewalk where homeless people were camped.
The time was a little after 9:00 a.m., authorities said.
Three men were struck and killed. They were pronounced deceased at the crash site.
Diffendal was one of the men killed. The two others have only been identified as a man 61 years old, and a man 65 years old.
Six other people were injured. Responders transported two patients to UCSD Medical Center. Their condition was described as critical.
Responders transported three other patients who suffered injuries ranging from serious to severe. One person suffered injuries that were described as minor.
None of the other victims have been identified.
Following the crash, the driver attempted to help the victims, reports say.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony. He was identified as Craig Martin Voss, a resident of San Diego, 71 years old.
The investigation is continuing.
