A collision with a van Wednesday in rural San Mateo County killed bicyclist Joy Covey, former revolutionary tech executive and chief financial officer of online retailer Amazon.com.
California Highway Patrol officer Arturo Montiel confirmed Thursday that Joy Dianne Covey, 50, of Woodside was the bicyclist that died Wednesday afternoon. The Natural Resources Defense Council, for which Covey served as treasurer and a director, also confirmed Thursday that she had died.
According to Montiel, Covey was riding her bike down Skyline Boulevard at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when she collided with a van that turned in front of her.
“The vehicle turned left directly in front of the bicycle, which was travelling downhill,” Montiel said.
The driver, a 22-year-old Fremont man, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. He has not been cited in the incident, but Montiel said they will continue to investigate the collision, although drugs or alcohol do not seem to be a factor.
According to Bloomberg’s executive profile, Covey held the position of Chief Financial Officer at Amazon between December 1996 and September 1999, and stayed with the company until April 2000. Forbes Magazine named her the 28th most powerful woman in business in 1999. After stepping down at Amazon, she became an independent investor and consultant and served on the boards of several companies, including JetBlue Airways and the NRDC. In a 2002 interview with the Harvard Law Bulletin, Covey—who obtained her law degree and MBA from the university in 1989—reminisced about dropping out of San Mateo High School when she was 15 and working as a grocery clerk before earning a degree at Fresno State in two-and-a-half-years.
