Girl Identified as Teen Driver Killed in Chino Crash; Others Injured
CHINO, CA (December 17, 2020) – Emelie Anna Hjerten was identified by the San Bernardino County coroner as the driver who was killed in a crash on Monday in Chino. The December 14 incident occurred on Central Avenue, near G Street and to the south of it.
The time was roughly 8:30 p.m.
Hjerten had been driving the vehicle–described as a Prius–and traveling northbound on Central Avenue. For reasons that are not known, authorities with Chino Police believe, the car veered into the lanes that head south and smashed against a tree.
The car erupted in flames. Two officers who arrived at the crash scene, and a witness, removed one person from the car. Three other occupants were still inside the vehicle, reports say.
Hjerten died at the crash site. She was a resident of Chino, 18 years old.
The other occupants of the vehicle have not been identified by name. They are a woman, 19 years old and a resident of Corona; a man 19 years old and a resident of Chino Hills; and a man 20 years old and a resident of Chino.
The types of injuries each suffered has not been reported, though one was described as in critical condition. The condition of the other two was described as stable.
Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
