Suspects Carjack Vehicle from Driver at Gunpoint; Crash into Car in Vista
VISTA, CA (July 9, 2020) – On Tuesday afternoon, two suspects carjacked a vehicle from a driver at gunpoint in Vista. They later smashed into a car and ran from the scene in the July 7 incident.
The time was roughly 3:00 p.m., the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.
Reports say two suspects–identified as Ricardo Hernandez, 30 years old; and Joseph Laxton, 26 years old–carjacked a vehicle on Postal Way in the 900 block. Authorities received calls of the incident, and the information was reported to personnel in a departmental helicopter that was above the area.
Deputies on the ground pursued the vehicle. Reports say the two suspects crashed into another vehicle and fled on foot.
Authorities found one suspect in a parking lot in the vicinity. They found the other suspect on South Santa Fe Avenue, according to reports.
According to authorities, the suspected carjacked vehicle had illegal drugs and a gun inside. The suspects face charges that include suspicion of carjacking, hit-and-run and threat causing death or great bodily injury, being a felon in possession of illegal drugs and a firearm, and participating in a criminal street gang.
The owner of the vehicle that was carjacked has not been identified in reports. It is not known if the person was hurt.
The other vehicle that was struck when the suspected stolen vehicle crashed has not been described. It is not known if there were occupants in the vehicle.
Investigators are continuing to work on gathering details and information regarding the incident.
